Over the Hill Car List: All 21 Vehicles and Unlock Trails

Over the Hill launched on Steam with 21 drivable vehicles, according to community databases built from the release build. Three are available from the start, and the other 18 are first-finish rewards for challenge trails spread across five areas in Canada and Algeria. This car list groups every vehicle by class, names the trail that unlocks it and separates release data from real-car comparisons made by the press.

How the 21 vehicles are grouped

The developer describes the lineup as vintage-style 4x4s, and the release roster follows that brief with boxy off-roaders, wagons and work trucks. Community guides sort the 21 vehicles into four classes: Trail, Wagon, Workhorse and Expedition. Trail is the largest group with nine vehicles, Wagon and Workhorse each hold five, and Expedition contains only two heavy machines.

Class is a useful shorthand rather than a strict ranking. A light Trail vehicle can slip through narrow forest gaps that a long Expedition truck struggles to turn in, while the heavy trucks bring more torque and weight to steep climbs. Use the table above to find a vehicle quickly, then read the class notes below before deciding which trail to attempt next.

The three starting vehicles

The Protector, The Trailrat and The Ding are part of the starting inventory, so you never need to unlock them. All three sit in the Trail class, which makes them light, forgiving choices for learning winch use, recovery and the opening area around Emerald Lake. The community database lists the Protector as British, the Trailrat as American and the Ding as Japanese.

Starting vehicles are not throwaway machines. The official game page describes upgrades, customizations and cosmetics unlocked through objectives, and Pebbles earned while exploring pay for those improvements. Spending early Pebbles on tyres and suspension for one starter often gets you to the first challenge trails faster than switching vehicles constantly.

Trail class: Brick, Polyana, Lynx, Wombat and more

Six Trail vehicles are unlocked through challenge trails. The Brick comes from the Bridal Veil Falls Climb and The Polyana from the Elvis Rim Trail, both in Gimli Ridge, while The Bull v1 is earned on the Blanshard Ridge Trail in Asgard Mountain. In Algeria, The Tinny and Das Lynx are rewards in the Aurès Mountains, and Das Wombat comes from the El Kalaa North Ascent in the Tassili n'Ajjer Desert.

Gimli Ridge rewards are the earliest of these for most players because that area connects directly to Emerald Lake by ferry. One interactive map lists 25 Pebbles for finishing the Bridal Veil Falls Climb and 40 Pebbles for the Elvis Rim Trail, which suggests the second trail is the tougher run. Community guides warn that The Polyana has weak ratings in several categories, so it is more of a collection target than an upgrade.

Wagon class: Trail Burner, Cumbre, Roamer and the Woodmans

The Trail Burner is the first Wagon most players see, because the Windy Joe Trail in Emerald Lake awards it on the first finish. The Grand Woodman comes from the Asulkan Lake Highline in Asgard Mountain, and the regular Woodman from the El Kalaa South Ascent in the Tassili n'Ajjer Desert. The Cumbre and the Roamer both belong to the Aurès Mountains, through the Jazira Ascent and the Kalaa Ulya Track.

Wagons sit between the light Trail vehicles and the heavy Workhorse trucks. The community database gives every Wagon 151 Nm and 2,000 kg, compared with 112 Nm and 1,600 kg for the Trail vehicles. That extra pull suits long climbs and loaded co-op trips, so a Wagon is a sensible middle step when a starter keeps stalling on the same slope.

Workhorse class: Burro, Blast Wagon, Boar, Timberbox and Rust Ox

The Burro is the Workhorse you can win earliest, as the reward for the Hermit Trail in Emerald Lake. Gimli Ridge holds two more, with The Blast Wagon on the Windcall Gorge Trail and Das Rust Ox on the Waddington Scree Trail. The Timberbox waits on the Midgar Ascent in Asgard Mountain, and The Boar on the Tarfa Ascent in the Tassili n'Ajjer Desert.

Workhorse entries share 207 Nm and 2,800 kg in the community database, a clear jump over the Wagons. One all-vehicle guide names The Blast Wagon as the best all-round pick outside the Expedition class, with The Boar as a reasonable alternative. The same guide says Das Rust Ox has the longest suspension travel in its class but poor grip and slide resistance.

That trade-off shows why a single best car rarely exists. A long-travel truck can crawl over scree that stops a stiffer vehicle, then slide sideways on wet grass that the stiffer vehicle handles easily. Match the Workhorse to the trail surface rather than to the headline numbers.

Expedition class: The Marshal and Das Mammoth

The Expedition class contains just two vehicles, and both are late rewards. The Marshal, listed as British, is unlocked through the Shabah Ascent in the Tassili n'Ajjer Desert. Das Mammoth, listed as German, comes from the Lower Midgar Trail in Asgard Mountain.

Both share the highest figures in the community database at 256 Nm and 3,200 kg. Community testing rates them as the strongest vehicles on nearly every criterion, which makes them the usual endgame answer to the best car question. Their size is the cost, since long bodies need wider lines between trees and more room to recover from a mistake.

Real cars behind the designs: FJ40, J70 and Volvo TP21

The developer has not published official real-world models for any vehicle, and the in-game names avoid manufacturer badges. When the first trailer appeared in January 2025, Car Throttle wrote that it showed what appeared to be unlicensed versions of an FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser, a Land Rover Defender and an original Ford Bronco. That is a press observation about the look of the vehicles, not a confirmed licence.

An August 2026 article on RacingGames went further and paired each name with a likely inspiration. It suggested The Boar resembles the Volvo TP21 Sugga, The Brick a Toyota Land Cruiser J70, The Roamer an FJ40 and The Protector a Land Rover Defender 90. It also linked The Polyana to the Lada Niva and Das Lynx to the Volkswagen Iltis.

Some of those pairings fit the release data well, since The Boar is listed as Swedish and The Brick as Japanese. Others need caution, because The Roamer is listed as American while the FJ40 is a Japanese design. The same pre-release list also named vehicles such as the Overlord, the Sentinel and the Buzz Wagon that do not appear in the release database, so treat it as an informed guess rather than a roster.

Which car should you unlock first?

Emerald Lake offers two vehicle rewards before you leave the first area: The Trail Burner from the Windy Joe Trail and The Burro from the Hermit Trail. Taking both gives you a Wagon and a Workhorse to pair with your starter. The ferry then opens Gimli Ridge, where The Blast Wagon is a strong next target.

Players chasing The Marshal or Das Mammoth should plan for travel, because their trails sit in the Tassili n'Ajjer Desert and Asgard Mountain. Those areas are reached later through portals rather than from the opening valley. Upgrading a mid-weight vehicle on the way makes those climbs far less frustrating.

In co-op, a mix of classes often works better than four copies of the same truck. A light Trail vehicle can scout a route, while a Workhorse or Expedition truck anchors winch recoveries. Check the unlock guide for how individual progress is saved before relying on a friend to finish a trail for you.

Where this list comes from

The vehicle names, countries and unlock trails on this page come from community databases and guides built from the release build. Two independent sources agree on the 21 names, the three starters and each unlock trail. Stats are reported by those sites, and a later patch could rebalance them.
